Information About Parrots
They belong to the family of Psittaciformes. Their other name is Psittacines. There are over 353 species of
birds in this family. They are grouped into two families of the Cacatuidae (cockatoos), and the Psittacidae (true
Wild ones are to be found in most of the warm areas of the world such as India, West Africa, South East Asia,
Australia, South and Central America and Central America. The Carolina Parakeet was a wild species homogenous to
the United States of America but are now extinct.
Members of the family have a characteristic curved beak shape. Their upper mandible (jaw) has a slight
mobility in the joint with the skull and a generally erect stance.
They have four toes on each foot placed two at the front and two back. This is known as zygodactyl.
Members of the group make excellent pets especially African greys, amazons, budgerigars, cockatiels, macaws, minimacaws and parakeets.
Some owners get their wings clipped.
In captivity they keep their rich colours and plumage and thrive well. They can live up to 80 years. They
can learn to mimic sounds around them including conversations and even voices from the television. The African
Grey Parrot is particularly adept at mimicry.
In the novel Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson there is a fictional character called Long John Silver who has a
pet parrot called Captain Flint. He sits on the pirate's shoulder and was named after his former ship Captain.
The Monty Python Flying Circus team did a sketch about a dead parrot in a pet shop. John Cleese played the customer,
Mr. Eric Praline, whilst Michael Palin was the shopkeeper. They argue about whether the sold Norwegian Blue parrot is dead
It was broadcast during the eighth episode of the television series. Actors John Cleese and Michael
Palin often repeated the sketch during live theatre performances.
I helped with the artwork for the cover of my husband’s book which tells the story of The Grey Lady Ghost of the Cambridge Military Hospital which reveals her origins in the QAIMNS and where she meets a QA veteran of Afghanistan. She still walks her wards and tells her story by taking Scott Grey, a QARANC nurse, to the battlefields of World War One and beyond. This is the first in the series of Grey and Scarlet Novels by CG Buswell. Read the first chapter for free.
